The 13th century, however, saw the extinction of the Celtic line, and, after forfeiture, the Earldom passed to the Stewarts. In 1389 King Robert II granted the title to George de Douglas and his heirs, whom failing, to Sir Alexander Hamilton. The Earldom is now vested in the Dukedom of Hamilton.
